A man named Alfredo sings a drinking song called a brindisi. He tells Violetta that he loves her. Violetta is unsure about love, but she is touched by him. Later, the two live together in a quiet country house. But Alfredo's father, Giorgio Germont, asks Violetta to leave his son. He says her past will hurt his family's name.

The first show was in Venice in 1853.

It was not a success at first. Some people in the crowd did not like the singers. Verdi was very sad about this. He even wrote that it was a failure. However, new shows became very popular. Today, it is one of the most performed operas in the world.
