It was started in 1976 in Rome. A man named Eugenio Scalfari helped found it. At first, the paper was quite small. It had only 20 pages. It did not even have sports news yet.

As time went on, the paper grew. It added many more pages. It began to cover sports and business. In 1985, it sold many copies. By 1988, it was the most read paper in Italy. It even reached 800,000 copies by the end of the 1980s.

The paper also changed how it looks. In 1995, it started using color on the first page. Later, it added color to every page. This helped other Italian papers do the same.

Today, the paper is very modern. It uses a digital first theory. This means it focuses on online news. People can read it on computers and phones. It is still one of the most important papers in Italy.
