A team at PRISA started the paper in May 1976. This was a big time for Spain. The country was moving toward democracy. Democracy is a way for people to have a say in their government. El País was the first paper to support this new way of life. It won a special prize for this role in 1983.

Over the years, the paper has faced many challenges. In 1978, a terrorist attack hurt people and damaged the building. In 1981, it published a special edition during a coup. A coup is an attempt to take control of a government by force. The paper asked people to stand up for democracy.

El País has many offices around the world. It has teams in places like Mexico City and Washington, D.C. It also makes editions for different countries. In 2024, it started a US edition. This helps Hispanic readers in the United States. The paper uses many different languages to share news.
