Eugenio Montale was a great Italian writer. He wrote poems, stories, and news articles. He was born in Genoa in 1896. His family spent summers near the sea. These views helped him write his poetry.

When he was young, Montale studied music. He took lessons from a singer. But he became a soldier in a big war. After that, he chose to write poetry instead. He was mostly self-taught. He loved reading old books and learning new languages.

Montale wrote about many deep ideas. His first book was called Ossi di seppia. This means "Cuttlefish Bones." He often wrote about nature to find peace. He also wrote about people he loved. He once wrote about a scholar named Irma Brandeis. He called her Clizia in his poems.

He was a very busy man. He worked for a large newspaper. He also worked as a book editor. In 1975, he won the Nobel Prize in Literature. This is a very big honor for writers. He lived in Milan until he died in 1981.
