It was made by the director Jean Renoir. The story takes place during World War I. It follows a group of French officers held in a German prison.

The film looks at how people act in war. It shows how different social classes connect. For example, two high-ranking officers from different sides know each other. They share many of the same customs and habits. This shows that people can have much in common.

The film also shows people from different backgrounds. One prisoner is a wealthy Jewish man named Rosenthal. He is very kind and shares his food with others. Another prisoner is a Black French officer. The film shows how people treat each other in hard times.

Some people think this movie is a masterpiece. The famous director Orson Welles loved it very much. It tells us that war can be a sad and empty thing. It teaches us that human bonds are more important than borders.
