Most speakers live in the two sovereign nations of North Korea and South Korea. However, the language is also found in parts of China, specifically in Jilin Province and Yanbian Prefecture. It is spoken by Sakhalin Koreans in Russia and by communities in Central Asia. Korean is a member of the Koreanic language family. This family includes the Jeju language, also known as Jejuan, spoken on Jeju Island. While they are related, speakers of Korean and Jeju are not mutually intelligible.

The structure of the Korean language is deeply tied to social history. The society from which it originated used a strict hierarchy. This history created a complex system of speech levels and honorifics. These are special grammatical forms used to show the formality of a situation. Speakers choose their words based on the social relationship between themselves and the listener. This ensures that respect is communicated through the very structure of every sentence. It is a way of weaving social values directly into daily communication.

Writing in Korean has undergone a massive transformation over many centuries.

For a long time, Korean scholars used Chinese characters known as Hanja. They also used various adaptation scripts like idu, hyangchal, gugyeol, and gakpil. These systems were very difficult to master. Because of this, most of the population remained illiterate for much of history. In the 15th century, King Sejong the Great changed everything. He personally developed Hangul, a featural alphabetic writing system. He called it 'eunmun,' which means colloquial script. His goal was to promote literacy among the common people.

Hangul is a highly efficient system of writing. It uses 24 basic letters called jamo. These basic letters can be combined to form 27 complex letters. Although the aristocracy initially looked down on Hangul for being too easy, it spread quickly. Common people used it to read and print popular novels. By the 17th century, even slaves were exchanging Hangul letters. The Kabo Reform of 1894 eventually decreed that government documents should be issued in Hangul. Today, North Korea has abolished Hanja in its writing, while South Korea uses it mainly for scholarly work and specific disambiguation.

The history of the language can be traced through several distinct stages. Modern Korean descended from Middle Korean, which came from Old Korean. These stages eventually lead back to the Proto-Koreanic language. Some linguists suggest the linguistic homeland of these speakers was in Manchuria. Around 300 BC, proto-Koreans may have expanded into the southern Korean Peninsula. They likely coexisted with or assimilated the descendants of Japonic Mumun cultivators. This movement helped shape the unique characteristics of the language we hear today.

Currently, there are noticeable differences between the standard languages of the North and the South. These variations include different pronunciations and specific vocabulary choices. These differences developed after the establishment of two independent governments. Despite these political and linguistic gaps, regional dialects within each country actually show more variation. Most people from both North and South Korea can still understand one another. This shows that the core of the language remains strong despite political borders.

Learning Korean presents unique challenges for many students. The United States Department of Defense ranks Korean at the highest difficulty level for English speakers. This is alongside languages like Arabic and Chinese. Much of this interest comes from globalized Korean popular culture. It also stems from long-standing military and diplomatic alliances. For example, the relationship between South Korea and the United States has driven language study. Understanding Korean requires mastering complex phonology and the specific way syllables are built.
