You might use knots for a practical job or to make something decorative. Practical knots are sorted by how they work. A hitch fastens a rope to another object like a ring or a stake. A bend joins two ends of a rope together. Loop knots create a circle in the rope. A splice is a special kind of knot that uses many strands.

Some knots even act as stoppers to keep a rope from slipping through a hole.

Knots work by using tension and friction to hold their shape.

When you pull a knot, the rope parts press against each other. This can cause the knot to slip if it is not secure. A knot might also capsize, which means it changes its form and rearranges its parts. Some knots are also described as jamming knots if they are very hard to untie.

Other knots are non-jamming, meaning they are easy to undo even after a heavy load. Using the right knot is a very important skill for many people.

People have studied and used knots throughout all of human history.
