Bowline

The bowline is a very important knot used to make a fixed loop. A fixed loop stays the same size even when you pull on the rope.

Many people call it the "king of knots" because it is so useful. It is easy to tie and very easy to untie. This is helpful because the knot stays easy to undo even after a heavy load pulls on it. It is considered one of the most essential knots along with the sheet bend and the clove hitch.

To tie this knot, you can use a fun story about a rabbit. First, you make a loop in the rope to act as a rabbit hole.

Next, the working end of the rope is the rabbit. The rabbit comes up through the hole. Then, the rabbit goes around the standing part of the rope, which acts like a big tree. Finally, the rabbit goes back down into the hole. This way of thinking helps people remember the steps easily. If you make the first loop backward, you might accidentally tie an Eskimo bowline instead.

This knot has a very long history. The name comes from the age of sail. On square-rigged ships, a bowline was a rope used to hold a sail toward the bow.

This kept the sail from being taken aback by the wind. One of the earliest mentions of the knot is in a book from 1627. John Smith called it the "Boling knot" in his work, A Sea Grammar. He said the knot was so strong that the sails would split before the knot would slip. Archaeologists even found similar rigging on a ship from Ancient Egypt. This ship belonged to Pharaoh Khufu and dates to the 26th century B.C.

People use the bowline in many different jobs today. Sailors use it to tie parts of a sail to a boat.

It is also a great rescue knot. A person can tie it around their waist using only one hand. This is helpful if they are hanging onto a ledge or a hole. The Federal Aviation Administration even suggests using it to tie down light aircraft. When you use a bowline, the rope keeps about two-thirds of its original strength. In the United Kingdom, firefighters must learn this knot during their training.

There are many special versions of the bowline for different tasks. The Yosemite bowline is a version used by people who go climbing.

If the rope is wet, a person might use a water bowline. This version is harder to jam when it gets soaked. There are also knots like the Spanish bowline that make two loops. Some versions, like the running bowline, make a noose that gets tighter when pulled. These different ways to tie the rope help people solve many hard jobs.
