Learning the sounds of Kirundi is a big task. The language uses five different vowels. These vowels can be short or they can be long. The length of a vowel can change a word's meaning. Kirundi is also a tonal language. This means the pitch of your voice is important. You can use high tones or low tones. Long vowels can even have rising or falling tones.

The history of Kirundi shows how it grew. It is part of the Rwanda-Rundi dialect continuum. This is a group of related ways of speaking. People can understand each other across many borders. This includes parts of Rwanda and Tanzania. It also reaches into Uganda, Kenya, and the Congo. Some dialects are even similar to Ha in western Tanzania.

Kirundi has played a big role in government. The 1962 Constitution made it an official language. At that time, many papers were printed in both French and Kirundi. After 1966, its use in government changed. However, it stayed an important way to speak. In 1972, Kirundi became the main language for primary school lessons.

Scientists and teachers still study Kirundi today. In 2020, the Rundi Academy was started. This group helps to promote and standardize the language. Experts also study how the sounds work together. They look at things like Meeussen's rule. This is a special rule about how tones change. They also study how certain consonants work in harmony.
