Kirsten Flagstad was a legendary Norwegian opera singer. She was a soprano, which is a singer with a very high voice. Most experts consider her the greatest Wagnerian soprano of her era. Many critics even called her "the voice of the century." Her voice was famous for its sheer beauty and consistency of tone.

Flagstad grew up in a musical household in Oslo, Norway. Her father, Michael Flagstad, was a conductor. Her mother, Maja Flagstad, was a pianist. Her siblings were also musicians, including a conductor and a soprano. She began her musical training in Oslo and made her stage debut in 1913. She later studied in Stockholm with Dr. Gillis Bratt to refine her skills. One of her greatest strengths was her ability to learn new operatic roles very quickly. It often took her only a few days to master a part.

Her career progressed through several distinct stages of vocal development. For over a decade, she performed operetta and lyric roles. These included characters like Marguerite in *Faust*. Eventually, she decided to transition to much heavier operatic roles. This shift required immense vocal strength and dramatic skill. Taking on the role of Aida helped unleash her dramatic abilities. However, it was the role of Isolde in Richard Wagner's *Tristan und Isolde* that helped her find her true voice.

Flagstad's path to international stardom involved several key locations and people. In 1929, Otto Hermann Kahn noticed her while visiting Scandinavia. He was the chairman of the board for the Metropolitan Opera. In 1933, she began singing at the Bayreuth Festival in Germany. This was a major step in her career. In August 1934, she auditioned for conductor Artur Bodanzky and manager Giulio Gatti-Casazza in St. Moritz. They hired her immediately to replace the singer Frida Leider.

Her debut at the Metropolitan Opera in New York was a massive success. She performed as Sieglinde in *Die Walküre* on February 2, 1935. Although the management planned a low-key debut, the performance became a sensation. The show was broadcast nationwide on the Met's weekly radio program. During the intermission, host Geraldine Farrar famously announced that a new star had been born. Flagstad's popularity grew so fast that she became the pre-eminent Wagnerian soprano of her time. Her performances were so popular that they helped save the Metropolitan Opera from bankruptcy.

Despite her success, Flagstad faced personal and professional challenges. She had a long-running feud with the tenor Lauritz Melchior. This conflict began during a bridge game in a hotel suite. The two singers did not speak to each other off stage for two years. Later, she also had a disagreement with the Met's general manager, Edward Johnson. She wanted her accompanist, Edwin McArthur, to conduct for her. She eventually resolved this by speaking directly to the Met's board of directors.

In 1941, Flagstad made the difficult decision to return to Norway. This was during a time when Germany occupied her home country. Many people in the United States were angry about her departure. Some critics and public figures spoke out against her. This period was very hard for her personally and professionally. However, she eventually returned to the world's greatest opera houses. In 1948, she was invited back to the Metropolitan Opera by Rudolf Bing. She continued to perform her major Wagnerian roles well into her 50s.
