Birgit Nilsson was a legendary Swedish dramatic soprano who redefined operatic performance in the 20th century.

A dramatic soprano is a singer with a voice characterized by great power and a rich, dark tone. Nilsson was celebrated for her overwhelming vocal force and her massive reserves of stamina. Her voice also possessed a gleaming brilliance and clarity in the upper register. She was most famous for her interpretations of works by composers Richard Wagner and Richard Strauss. These roles require singers to project over very large, loud orchestras. Many critics and audiences viewed her as the successor to the great Norwegian soprano Kirsten Flagstad.

Nilsson's musical journey began on a farm in Västra Karup, located in Skåne, Sweden. When she was only three years old, she began playing melodies on a toy piano. Her vocal talent was discovered while she was singing in a church choir. After receiving advice from a choirmaster, she studied voice for six months in Åstorp. She then auditioned at the Royal Swedish Academy of Music in Stockholm. Nilsson placed first out of 47 singers and won the Christina Nilsson scholarship. Although she studied with teachers like Joseph Hislop and Arne Sunnegårdh, she considered herself largely self-taught. She believed the stage was the best teacher because it taught her how to project.

Her professional career began with a sudden debut at the Royal Swedish Opera in 1946. She replaced an ailing singer in Carl Maria von Weber's *Der Freischütz* with only three days' notice. After this, she gained national attention in 1947 by performing Verdi's *Lady Macbeth*. Her repertoire grew to include many complex roles from composers like Puccini and Tchaikovsky. In Stockholm, she performed roles such as Donna Anna in *Don Giovanni* and the Marschallin in *Der Rosenkavalier*. She also sang roles like Aida, Tosca, and Senta in *Der fliegende Holländer*. Many of these early performances were sung in her native Swedish.

Nilsson eventually achieved massive international stardom through performances at the world's most prestigious opera houses. A major turning point occurred in 1953 during her debut at the Vienna State Opera. She became a regular performer there for more than 25 years. In 1954, she performed Elsa in Wagner's *Lohengrin* at the Bayreuth Festival. She also sang her first Brünnhilde in a complete *Ring* cycle at the Munich Opera Festival. Her American debut took place in 1956 at the San Francisco Opera. However, it was her 1959 performance as Isolde at the Metropolitan Opera in New York City that made her a global star. This performance was so significant that it appeared on the front page of the news.

Throughout her career, Nilsson was known for her incredible vocal endurance and business intelligence. The *New York Times* described her voice as having "impeccable trueness and impregnable stamina." She was also a shrewd businesswoman who negotiated her own contracts. Because her specific vocal skills were so rare, she became one of the highest-paid singers in the field. She often used a tactic of being evasive or saying "maybe" to start contract negotiations. This helped her manage her career effectively. Even as a superstar, she remained humble about her talent, often attributing her success to her parents.

Nilsson was as famous for her quick wit as she was for her singing. She frequently engaged in humorous exchanges with famous conductors like Herbert von Karajan. Once, when Karajan criticized her for lacking "heart," she joked that they had something in common. She also participated in friendly competitions with other singers. For example, she once had a contest with tenor Franco Corelli to see who could hold a high C the longest. She was also known for her blunt honesty. When asked about her favorite roles, she famously said, "Isolde made me famous. Turandot made me rich."

Despite her success, Nilsson faced various challenges during her life. She suffered physical injuries, such as a sprained ankle in 1971 and a dislocated shoulder in 1974. She also dealt with the stress of being stalked by an actress named Nell Theobald for many years. Even the process of recording her voice was a source of concern. She felt that studio recordings did not capture the true explosive power of her high notes. She often expressed sadness that her recordings might not represent her best work. Nevertheless, her legacy remains through her many complete recordings, including the famous Decca recording of Wagner's *Ring Cycle*.
