It was part of the Kingdom of León. The name Castile comes from many castles. These castles protected the land. In the year 931, a man named Fernán González led the area. He helped the land become more independent.

Later, Castile became its own kingdom. In 1065, Ferdinand I became a king. He ruled both Castile and León. This was one of the first times the lands joined. The kingdoms joined again and again. In 1230, the union became permanent. This new group was called the Crown of Castile.

Castile also became a center for learning. In 1085, the kings took the city of Toledo. Many smart people went there. They used the School of Toledo to study. They translated old books from Greek and Arabic into Latin. This helped spread new ideas to all of Europe. Later, King Ferdinand II and Queen Isabella I joined their lands. They were known as the Catholic Monarchs.
