The king cobra is a truly remarkable snake found across much of Asia.

It is the longest venomous snake on Earth and is also among the heaviest. While its name suggests it is a true cobra, science shows it belongs to a different group. These snakes live in many places, from the Indian subcontinent to Southern China. They can be found in tropical areas like Thailand, Vietnam, and Malaysia.

Because they live in such large areas, they are not seen very often.

This snake is a top predator that mostly hunts other snakes.

It uses its forked tongue to find food by picking up scents in the air. These scents go to a special sensory organ in the roof of its mouth. After it bites its prey with its fangs, it swallows the meal whole. Its flexible jaws allow it to eat animals much larger than its own head. Sometimes, the snake may even use its strong body to squeeze its prey. After a big meal, it might not need to eat again for many months.

Scientists have studied these snakes for a very long time.

A naturalist named Theodore Edward Cantor first described them in 1836. He found four specimens near the Sundarbans and Kolkata. Later, in 1864, a man named Günther proposed the name Ophiophagus. This name comes from the snake's habit of eating other snakes. In 1945, Charles Mitchill Bogert confirmed the name we use today. He argued that these snakes are very different from other cobra species.

King cobras have many unique physical features and facts.

When they feel threatened, they raise their bodies and spread a neck hood. They also make a low sound that sounds more like a growl than a hiss. This low sound is caused by special chambers in their throat.

These snakes are very special parents in the animal kingdom.

The king cobra is the only snake that builds a nest above the ground. The female gathers dry leaves to build a nest at the base of a tree. She stays with her eggs to protect them while they grow. This careful care helps the next generation of snakes survive. Today, these snakes are considered vulnerable due to the loss of their homes. They remain an important part of nature and folklore in many Asian countries.
