Khema was a famous Buddhist nun. She was a top female follower of the Buddha. Many people call her a chief disciple.

Khema was born into a royal family. She was the daughter of a king. Later, she married King Bimbisara. She was a very beautiful queen. She loved her looks very much.

Her husband wanted her to meet the Buddha. He hired poets to sing about a beautiful monastery. This made Khema curious to visit. At the monastery, the Buddha showed her a vision. He showed a beautiful woman grow old and die. This helped Khema see that beauty does not last. She reached a high level of wisdom called enlightenment.

After this, Khema became a nun. The Buddha said she was the best in wisdom. This was a special title. She was a leader for other nuns. She even taught a king about the Buddha. This was very rare for a woman at that time.

Some scholars say her story shows that anyone can learn. Her wisdom was a gift from her past lives. She is still remembered as a great teacher today.
