His name means "he who grows pure rice." He lived in a place called Kapilavastu. Many stories call him a king. However, most experts think he was a leader in a republic. In a republic, a group of people helps make choices. This leader was called a rāja. He did not rule all by himself.

Suddhodana had a wife named Maha Maya. They had a son named Siddhartha Gautama. Siddhartha later became known as the Buddha. Maya died soon after Siddhartha was born. Later, his stepmother was Mahapajapati Gotami. Suddhodana also had a son named Nanda and a daughter named Sundari Nanda.

Suddhodana wanted his son to stay in the palace. He did not want Siddhartha to become a monk. But Siddhartha left home to find answers about life. This event is called the Great Renunciation. Suddhodana felt sad when his son left. He sent many people to ask the Buddha to come home. The Buddha did visit his father. He taught Suddhodana his ways. Suddhodana reached a high spiritual state before he died.
