Some animals have a huge impact on their home.

We call these keystone species. The name comes from a stone in an arch. That stone holds the whole arch together. Without it, the arch falls down. A keystone species works the same way. Even if there are not many of them, they keep the ecosystem in balance.

Some keystones are predators.

A jaguar is a predator. It eats 87 different kinds of animals. This helps keep the jungle balanced. In the ocean, sea otters protect kelp forests. They do this by eating sea urchins. If the otters leave, the urchins eat too much kelp. This can make the forest disappear.

Other keystones change the land.

A beaver is an ecosystem engineer. This means it builds things that change the world around it. Beavers make dams. These dams turn streams into ponds or wetlands. This helps many animals like birds and fish.

Prairie dogs also help. Their tunnels let rainwater soak into the ground. This helps the soil stay healthy.
