The puppet has a simple design that helps the performer. This design lets the person's arm and hand make many gestures. It also helps them show a wide range of expressions. A pointed collar was added to his look a long time ago. This collar helps him look more like a frog. It also hides the seam where his head meets his body.

Kermit first appeared in 1955 on a show called Sam and Friends.

Jim Henson created the very first version of the character. This early Kermit was actually made from a discarded turquoise coat. It belonged to Jim Henson's mother. He also used two halves of a ping pong ball for eyes. At first, the character looked more like a lizard than a frog. It was not until 1969 that he was officially a frog.

Many different people have performed or voiced Kermit over the years. Jim Henson performed him from the start until he died in 1990. After that, Steve Whitmire performed the character until 2016. Since 2017, Matt Vogel has been the performer for Kermit. Kermit is also a famous singer with many great songs. He sang "Bein' Green" in 1970 for Sesame Street. He also sang "Rainbow Connection" in 1979 for The Muppet Movie. That song was even added to the National Recording Registry in 2021.

Kermit is a character that connects to many different places and languages.
