The city's development was driven by specific industries over many years. Originally, growth was promoted by the logging and carpentry sectors. These industries were connected to the city by a railway that is now closed. In 1931, the local economy changed significantly when diamond mines were discovered in the area. This discovery helped establish Kenema as a key economic center. Today, the city features modern structures, such as the Kenema ultra modern shopping mall.

Health is a critical aspect of life in Kenema due to certain tropical diseases. The city and Bo are endemic areas for Lassa fever, a highly contagious tropical hemorrhagic fever. The Kenema Government Hospital serves as a center for international efforts to fight this disease. The hospital works with the World Health Organization (WHO) and UNAMSIL to manage the illness. It admits between 250 and 500 suspected cases every year. Additionally, the hospital has worked to increase COVID-19 testing capacity using a €500,000 grant from the German Corporation for International Cooperation.
