His writing has reached a massive global audience. He has sold more than 195 million copies of his books. Many of his works have reached the number-one position on the New York Times Best Seller list. His stories often move between modern suspense and deep historical settings. This variety has helped him maintain a long and influential career in literature.

Follett was born on June 5, 1949, in Cardiff, Wales. His parents were members of the Plymouth Brethren. Because of their beliefs, they did not allow him to watch television or films. This restriction led him to develop a very strong interest in reading. He moved to London at age ten. After reading through the children's section of a library, he began reading adult books. One book, *Live and Let Die*, inspired his first thrillers ten years later. He later studied philosophy at University College London. After graduating in 1970, he worked as a trainee reporter for the *South Wales Echo*. He also worked as a general-assignment reporter for the *Evening News* in London.

Follett did not start writing fiction as a primary job. He originally worked in the publishing industry. By the late 1970s, he was the deputy managing director of Everest Books. He began writing stories during his evenings and weekends as a hobby. He once noted that he started writing because he needed £200 to fix his car. He saw that a fellow journalist had received a £200 advance for a thriller. His commercial breakthrough arrived in 1978 with the spy thriller *Eye of the Needle*. This book sold over 10 million copies. It brought him both international fame and significant wealth.

His career can be divided into different types of storytelling. He first gained fame through spy thrillers. His early best-sellers included *Triple*, *The Key to Rebecca*, *The Man from St. Petersburg*, and *Lie Down with Lions*. He also wrote *On Wings of Eagles*, which was based on the true story of employees rescued from Iran during the 1979 revolution. Later, he moved into historical fiction. This shift was marked by the massive success of the *Kingsbridge* series. This series provides a detailed account of civilization, including its laws and customs.

The *Kingsbridge* series is one of his most significant achievements. It began with *The Pillars of the Earth* in 1989. This novel is set in 12th-century England and focuses on the building of a cathedral. It has sold 26 million copies as of 2017. The series includes several other volumes. *World Without End* is a sequel set 157 years later during the Black Death plague. *A Column of Fire* follows a romance during the era of Elizabethan England. *The Evening and the Morning* acts as a prequel set around 1000 AD. Finally, *The Armour of Light* is set in 1792 during the Industrial Revolution.

Another major work is the *Century Trilogy*. This trilogy consists of *Fall of Giants*, *Winter of the World*, and *Edge of Eternity*. These books follow five interrelated families from different nations. These families include Welsh, American, German, Russian, and English lineages. The stories trace these families through massive historical shifts. These include the First World War and the Russian Revolution. They also cover the rise of Nazi Germany and the Spanish Civil War. The final book follows the families through the Cold War and the US Civil Rights Movement.
