Ken Aston was a famous soccer referee from England. He made many big changes to the game. He wanted the rules to be clear for everyone.

In the past, referees wore tweed jackets. Aston liked a black flight jacket from a store. He wore it with a white shirt. This created the black uniform we see today. He also made bright flags for linesmen. He used yellow and red colors. He did this so people could see them in thick fog.

His most famous idea was the card system. He thought about traffic lights while driving. He saw that colors can help people understand rules without words. His wife, Hilda, helped him make the first cards from paper. The yellow card is a warning. The red card means a player must leave the game. This system started in the 1970 World Cup.

Aston also helped start the practice of using a fourth official. He also used boards to show substitute numbers. He loved to teach new referees. He taught for many years in the United States.
