The city grew because of the coal found deep underground. People first discovered coal in this area in 1721. Later, the first real coal mines were built in 1907. A chemical plant was also added in 1916. Building a railway helped the area grow even more. This train line connected places like Yurga and Kolchugino. These connections made it easier to move goods and people around.

Kemerovo has a long and interesting history. It grew from several older Russian settlements. One small waypoint was built nearby in 1657. A settlement called Shcheglovsk was founded in 1701. By 1859, there were seven different villages in this area. The town of Shcheglovsk was officially named a town in 1918. This date is now seen as the founding of Kemerovo. The city was eventually renamed Kemerovo in 1932.

These included Shcheglovka, Kemerovo, Yevseyevo, Krasny Yar, Kur-Iskitim, Davydovo, and Borovaya. Shcheglovo received town status on 9 May 1918. This date is now recognized as the official founding of the city. The town was later renamed Kemerovo on 27 May 1932.

The city's economy is built on coal mining and heavy industry. It hosts plants for steel, aluminum, and machinery. There are also industries for chemicals and fertilizers. Since the disintegration of the Soviet Union, these industries have faced a severe decline. This shift has resulted in high levels of unemployment. Despite these challenges, the city remains a significant industrial center. It is home to major companies like the Siberian Business Union.

Kemerovo has a complex system of public transportation. The network includes 70 city bus routes and 63 suburban routes. There are also 53 public taxi routes. Electric transport is a major part of the system, with 5 trams and 9 trolleybuses. Every day, 686 transport units enter the city streets. This includes 201 buses and 364 route taxis. The Kemerovo International Airport serves the city to the southeast. It is named after the cosmonaut Alexei Leonov.
