The city's layout is defined by the Oka River, which divides it into two distinct sections. The Upper City, known as Nagornaya chast, sits on the hilly eastern bank of the river. This area includes the Nizhegorodsky district, which contains the historic Kremlin and major government agencies. The Lower City, or Zarechnaya chast, occupies the flatter western side of the Oka. This section includes five districts, such as Avtozavodsky, which was built around the Gorky Automobile Plant.

Prince George II of Vladimir established the original settlement as a small wooden hillfort. The site was strategically chosen at the meeting point of the Volga and Oka rivers. In the 14th century, the importance of the city grew when the seat of the Suzdal Principality moved there from Gorodets. Later, the massive red-brick Kremlin was constructed between 1508 and 1511. This citadel remains one of the strongest and earliest preserved fortresses in Russia. It has historically protected the city from various sieges.

In 1612, the city played a crucial role in Russian political history. A local merchant named Kuzma Minin organized a volunteer army. This force was commanded by Prince Dmitry Pozharsky. Together, they expelled Polish troops from Moscow. This victory helped end the Time of Troubles and allowed the Romanov dynasty to take power.

The city became a vital industrial hub, earning the nickname "Russian Detroit." This was due to the development of large-scale manufacturing, including the Gorky Automobile Plant. During World War II, the city suffered heavy German air raids. The attackers targeted the city's industries because they supplied essential military equipment. For many years, the city remained closed to foreigners to protect military research. Even street maps were not available for sale until the mid-1970s.
