He served as the 26th prime minister of the nation. He also served as the 13th governor-general of New Zealand. The governor-general is a high-ranking official who represents the monarch. Holyoake is the only person in New Zealand history to hold both of these top roles. He was also the first prime minister born in the 20th century. People often called him "Kiwi Keith" during his childhood. This nickname helped distinguish him from an Australian cousin with the same name.

Holyoake's early life was shaped by hard work on a farm. He was born near Pahiatua in the Wairarapa region. His family lived in various places before settling on a farm in Riwaka. After his father died, Holyoake left formal school at age 12. He spent his time working on the family hop and tobacco farm. His mother, who was a trained teacher, continued his education at home. Through his work, he joined local farming associations. These groups helped spark his interest in how the country was governed.

His political journey began in the early 1930s. In 1932, he was elected as the Member of Parliament for Motueka. He represented the Reform Party and was the youngest MP at that time. He was 28 years old when he won that seat. In 1936, he played a vital role in forming the modern National Party. Although he lost his seat in 1938, he returned to Parliament in 1943. He then represented the electorate of Pahiatua.

Holyoake rose quickly through the ranks of the National Party. In 1949, his party won the election and he joined the Cabinet. He served as the Minister of Agriculture for eight years. During this time, he helped encourage farm mechanization. He also worked to nearly eliminate the rabbit pest through an extermination policy. In 1954, he became the first person formally appointed as deputy prime minister. He served under Prime Minister Sidney Holland.

He first became prime minister in 1957. This happened because Sidney Holland retired due to ill health. Holyoake lost the 1957 election by only two seats. He then served as the leader of the Opposition for three years. In 1960, the National Party returned to power. Holyoake led the government through a period of great economic expansion. He was a skilled campaigner who helped his party win four consecutive elections. This was a feat that no one has surpassed since.

His government introduced several important legal and social reforms. In 1961, his administration passed the Crimes Act. This new law rewrote the criminal legal code. A major part of this act was the abolition of capital punishment. This meant the government ended the use of the death penalty. Holyoake also addressed the needs of Māori people. He acted on findings from the Hunn Report regarding Māori assets. He also defended racial equality in sports during his time in office.

Outside of politics, he developed a large block of land near Lake Taupō. He turned the scrub and fern into a town called Kinloch. He called this town his proudest achievement. He served as prime minister for just under 12 years. This makes him the third-longest-serving prime minister in the country's history.
