She served as the 37th Prime Minister of New Zealand from 1999 to 2008. After her time in New Zealand, she became the administrator of the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP). The UNDP is an organization that works to help countries develop and reduce poverty. Clark was the second woman to serve as Prime Minister in her country. She was also the fifth longest-serving person to hold that office. Her career spanned local politics, national government, and global leadership.

Clark's journey began on a farm in Te Pahu, west of Hamilton.

She was the eldest of four daughters. Her father, George Clark, ran the family farm for many decades. Her mother, Margaret McMurray, was a primary school teacher. Clark attended Epsom Girls' Grammar School before entering the University of Auckland. In 1974, she graduated with a Master of Arts with Honours. Her university thesis focused on how people in rural areas behave politically. As a teenager, she became active in protesting the Vietnam War. She also campaigned against foreign military bases in New Zealand.

Before reaching the highest office, Clark worked through many levels of the Labour Party. She served on the party's national executive committee for many years. She also held several leadership roles, such as president of the Labour Youth Council. Clark attempted to enter local politics in Auckland in 1974 and 1977. Although she performed well in votes, she did not win those seats. She eventually won a seat in Parliament in 1981. She represented the electorate of Mount Albert for nearly thirty years. During her first term, she was one of only eight women in a Parliament of 40 members.

Clark rose quickly through the ranks of the Fourth Labour Government.

After the Labour Party lost an election, Clark took a major leadership role. She challenged Mike Moore for the leadership of the party and won in 1993.
