Ardern's rise to prime minister involved complex political negotiations. In the 2017 general election, the Labour Party won 46 seats. The National Party won 56 seats. Because no single party had total control, negotiations were required. The New Zealand First party chose to form a minority coalition government with Labour. This coalition was supported by the Green Party. Ardern was sworn in as prime minister on 26 October 2017. At age 37, she was the world's youngest female head of government.

Her government faced significant social and economic hurdles. The Sixth Labour Government dealt with a housing crisis and child poverty. They also addressed issues of social inequality. In the 2020 general election, Ardern led the party to a landslide victory. Labour gained an overall majority with 65 seats in Parliament. This was the first majority government since 1996. However, she later faced criticism regarding the economy and the cost of living.

Ardern eventually decided to end her term as leader. On 19 January 2023, she announced her resignation. She stated that she "didn't have enough in the tank" to continue. She resigned as Labour leader on 22 January. She submitted her formal resignation as prime minister three days later. After her time in New Zealand politics, she spent time in the United States. In early 2026, she moved to Sydney, Australia, with her family.
