Kaziranga National Park is a very special place in Assam, India.

The story of the park began a long time ago.
Many amazing animals live in these forests and grasslands.

Nature can be both beautiful and difficult for the animals.

Kaziranga National Park is a vital protected area located in the Indian state of Assam.
The landscape of Kaziranga is a complex system of interconnected habitats. It consists of tall elephant grass, marshlands, and dense tropical moist broadleaf forests. The geography is defined by four major rivers, including the massive Brahmaputra River. These rivers create various landforms, such as exposed sandbars and elevated regions called chapories.
Seasonal changes drive the biological processes within the park.
The monsoon season brings a different set of environmental pressures.
Kaziranga is world-famous for its "Big Five" species.
The history of the park is tied to early conservation efforts. In 1904, Mary Curzon, the wife of the Viceroy of India, visited the region. After failing to see any single-horned rhinoceroses, she persuaded her husband to take action. This led to the creation of the Kaziranga Proposed Reserve Forest on June 1, 1905. In 1950, forest conservationist P. D. Stracey renamed the area the "Kaziranga Wildlife Sanctuary." He did this to remove hunting connotations from the name. The park celebrated its centennial in 2005.
Legends and local history add depth to the name Kaziranga. One local legend tells of a girl named Rawnga and a youth named Kazi who disappeared into the forest. Another theory suggests the name comes from the Karbi language. In Karbi, "Kazi" means goat and "Rangai" means red, suggesting the "Land of red goats." Historical records from the seventeenth century mention the region. During this time, the Ahom king Pratap Singha was reportedly impressed by the fish from Kaziranga. Today, the park remains a significant cultural and biological treasure for India.
