To the west is the Jutland peninsula. To the east are parts of Sweden. The Baltic Sea flows into the Kattegat. This happens through the Danish straits.

The sea is quite shallow. Many sandy and stony reefs sit under the water. These reefs can be dangerous for boats. People have dug deep paths in the sea to help ships pass. They also use lights to guide them. Many big cities and ports are near the coast. These include Gothenburg and Aarhus.

There are also islands like Samsø, Læsø, and Anholt. Some islands are very dry. People call them part of a desert belt.

The water has two layers. The top layer has less salt than the bottom layer. This happens because water from the Baltic Sea flows in. In the north, you can find bubbling reefs. These are spots where gas bubbles up from the sea floor. Many birds and fish use this area to live and feed.
