He was a satirist, an essayist, and a poet. He also wrote plays and short sayings called aphorisms. Kraus used his writing to point out problems in society. He focused on German culture and politics. He even attacked the way newspapers reported the news. His work was so important that he was nominated for the Nobel Prize in Literature three times.

In 1899, Kraus founded his own magazine called Die Fackel. This name means "The Torch."

He used the magazine to fight corruption and bad behavior. He wanted to show hypocrisy in the government and the press. Kraus was very independent with his work. He used his own money to run the magazine. This meant he could print exactly what he wanted. He published 922 issues of Die Fackel in total.

Kraus had a very interesting early life. He was born in Jičín, which was then part of Austria-Hungary.

His father, Jacob Kraus, was a papermaker. The family moved to Vienna in 1877. Kraus studied law at the University of Vienna in 1892. Later, he changed his studies to philosophy and German literature. He eventually left university to work as an actor and stage director. He was part of a group called Young Vienna.

Kraus was a very busy performer and writer. He gave about 700 public readings during his career. At his peak, 4,000 people came to hear his lectures. His magazine was also a huge success. It sold 40,000 copies at its best. He wrote a massive play called Die letzten Tage der Menschheit. This means "The Last Days of Mankind." It was a satirical play about the First World War. He used real documents to help tell the story.

Many people remember Kraus for his clever way of using words. He often used wordplay with quotations to make his point. He even used a "guerrilla prank" to trick a newspaper editor. Kraus also fought against people he thought were dishonest. He once made a famous poster to ask for a police chief's resignation. This poster is still seen as an important part of Austrian history. His life shows how writing can be used to speak truth to power.
