He studies how tiny molecules can be built in new ways. His work helps scientists make useful products for the world. He is famous for discovering new ways to join chemicals together. This work is so important that he won the Nobel Prize twice.

He is only the fifth person ever to win two Nobel prizes. He is also one of only three people to win two prizes in the same science field.

One of his big ideas is called click chemistry.

This is a way to snap molecules together very quickly. These reactions are highly selective, which means they only grab what they want. They are also exothermic, so they release energy as they work. These steps happen under mild conditions, so they do not need extreme heat. A great example is the reaction between an azide and an alkyne. This creates a specific shape called a 1,2,3-triazole.

Sharpless has had a long and busy career in science. He was born in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, on April 28, 1941. He went to Dartmouth College and earned his degree in 1963. Later, he earned a Ph.D. from Stanford University in 1968. He worked as a professor at MIT and Stanford University. Now, he leads a laboratory at Scripps Research. He is also a professor at Kyushu University.

His discoveries have changed how chemistry works in the lab. In 2001, he won half of the Nobel Prize in Chemistry. This was for his work on chirally catalysed oxidation reactions. He also found ways to make chiral molecules. Chiral molecules have special shapes that are not the same as their mirror images. In 2022, he won another Nobel Prize. This time, he shared it for developing click chemistry and bioorthogonal chemistry. He worked with scientists Carolyn R. Bertozzi and Morten P. Meldal.

Science can sometimes be a dangerous job. In 1970, Sharpless was working at MIT when an NMR tube exploded. This accident blinded him in one eye. Because of this, he always tells people to wear safety glasses. He believes there is never a good excuse to skip them. Outside of the lab, he loves to go fishing. He spent many summers on fishing boats during his college years.
