The Kamerun campaign was a major conflict during the First World War. It took place in the German colony of Kamerun in Africa. The fighting lasted from August 1914 until March 1916.

During this time, the British, French, and Belgians invaded the German territory. This war changed the map of West Africa forever. It was a fight for control over a large and important land.

The campaign moved through many different types of land. In the east, French troops moved through marshlands.

In the north and south, British forces pushed into the colony from Nigeria. The Germans defended their territory from many sides. They used strong points like forts to slow the Allied advance. Some battles happened on the coast, while others were deep in the mountains. The fighting was a slow and difficult process for everyone involved.

Germany had controlled Kamerun since 1884. They grew their power through several wars in the area. In 1911, France gave a large area called Neukamerun to Germany. This happened because of a settlement called the Treaty of Fez.

By 1914, the colony included parts of modern Nigeria, Chad, Gabon, and Congo. The borders were only recently set between 1911 and 1913. This meant the land was still being mapped by Europeans.

The numbers of soldiers involved were very different. At first, the German Schutztruppen had only 1,855 men. They later grew this army to about 6,000 soldiers. The Allied forces were much larger than the Germans. French Equatorial Africa could provide 20,000 soldiers for the war. British Nigeria could raise an army of 7,550 men. In late 1915, 5,400 more soldiers from the Indian 5th Light Infantry Division arrived to help the Allies.

By early 1916, the German commander Carl Zimmermann knew the war was lost. He ordered his troops and civilians to flee to Spanish Guinea. This was a neutral area nearby.

After the fighting ended, Britain and France divided the land. Britain took about one fifth of the colony. France took most of the rest, including the central plateau. This division was made official by the Treaty of Versailles. The land became two separate areas under the League of Nations.
