Kalmunai is a significant city in the Eastern Province of Sri Lanka. It is located within the Ampara District. The city sits directly on the eastern coast of the island. To its east lies the vast Indian Ocean. The name Kalmunai comes from two Tamil words. "Kal" means stone and "munai" means corner. This name describes the geography where the land meets the sea. This coastal position has shaped the city's history and culture for centuries.

The geography of Kalmunai defines its many connections to nearby places. To the north is the village of Periyaneelavanai. This village acts as the border between the Ampara and Batticaloa Districts. To the south, the city connects to the suburb of Karaitivu. A small hamlet called Natpiddimunai is very close to the main town. It provides access to the western regions of the Ampara District. It uses a popular causeway named "Kittanky" to connect the mainland to the Colony regions. Natpiddimunai is located between the Pattippalai Aru and the Mettuvaddai plains.

Kalmunai is organized into several distinct administrative divisions. Kalmunai Central is the primary area for business and government. This division includes Kalmunai Town, Kalmunai Kudy, Natpaddimunai, and Chenaikudiruppu. Sainthamaruthu is a large residential area in the southern part of the city. It has its own division to manage its specific community needs. Pandiruppu is another division located in the eastern part of the city. Maruthamunai is a neighborhood that is part of the larger city framework. These divisions help the city manage its many different residents.

The population of Kalmunai is quite diverse. According to the 2012 census, the population was 99,893 people. The population density was 4,343 people per square kilometer. The city is unique because it is a municipality where Muslims form the majority. Because of this, there are specific administrative divisions for different groups. The Kalmunai Muslim Division serves the needs of the Muslim community. The Kalmunai Tamil Division governs the northern part of the city. This area is mainly inhabited by Tamil Hindus.

History has brought both growth and great hardship to Kalmunai. The region was influenced by ancient Tamil kingdoms and colonial powers. Its location made it an important trading post for maritime routes. However, the city suffered during the Sri Lankan civil war. This conflict brought civil unrest and violence to local civilians. In 2004, the Indian Ocean tsunami struck the coast. This natural disaster caused many deaths and destroyed much infrastructure. The city has had to rebuild after these difficult events.

Today, Kalmunai is a major economic hub for the Eastern Province. The economy relies on several key sectors. Trade is very important because of the coastal location. Agriculture is also a major part of daily life. Farmers focus on rice cultivation and horticulture. Fishing is another vital industry due to the proximity to the ocean. The city also has manufacturing sectors. These include garment manufacturing, food processing, and construction. A large marketplace in the commercial center allows for much of this trade.

Education is a central part of life in Kalmunai. The city offers many learning opportunities for young people. There are many public and private schools available. These schools provide education from primary through secondary levels. Some well-known institutions include Carmel Fatima College and Zahira College. There are also several national schools in the area. For those seeking higher education, private colleges offer various programs. These include both undergraduate and postgraduate degrees in different fields.
