It sits within the Wide Bay–Burnett region of Queensland, just north of the state capital, Brisbane. The island is part of a World Heritage-listed area. This designation includes the island itself, the surrounding waters, and parts of the nearby mainland. These protected areas together form the Great Sandy National Park.

Today, K'gari is a major destination for travelers. Up to 500,000 people visit the island every year to explore its unique landscape.

The island's geography has changed significantly over thousands of years. Originally, K'gari was attached to the Australian mainland. It became a separate island between 10,000 and 20,000 years ago as sea levels rose. The Butchulla people are the traditional owners of this land. They have inhabited the area for a very long time. Archaeological evidence suggests they arrived between 5,000 and 50,000 years ago.

The Butchulla people have a creation story about the island's origins. They tell of a spirit named Yendingie who worked with a white spirit called Princess K'gari. According to the story, Yendingie changed her into the beautiful island we see today.

European contact with the island began with explorers and shipwrecks. James Cook was the first recorded Briton to sight the island in May 1770. He named a location Indian Head after seeing Aboriginal people gathered there. Later, Matthew Flinders sailed past the island in 1799 and 1802. During his second voyage, he landed at Sandy Cape while charting Hervey Bay.

In 1836, a significant shipwreck occurred involving the brig Stirling Castle. The ship hit coral in the Great Barrier Reef while traveling to Singapore. Captain James Fraser died following the wreck. Because of this event, European settlers named the land Fraser Island.

Settlement by non-Indigenous people led to difficult times for the Butchulla people. In 1847, non-Indigenous settlement began in the mainland area, which sparked frontier conflict. This period involved violence between Indigenous and non-Indigenous groups. In 1851, a government-led force was sent to the island to apprehend Aboriginal people. This force included the Native Police and tracked groups across the island. Some reports suggest that Indigenous people were "dispersed into the sea" near Indian Head. This history remains a serious part of the island's past.

In the late 19th century, the government implemented strict laws regarding Indigenous people. Under the Aboriginals Protection and Restriction of the Sale of Opium Act 1897, the Queensland Government moved many Indigenous people to camps. One such camp was located on the west coast at Bogimbah.

These camps were often managed by the government or religious missions. Conditions at Bogimbah were described as very dire. Inmates lacked adequate food, medical supplies, and proper shelter. Many people suffered from diseases like pulmonary tuberculosis or malnutrition. In 1904, the government closed the Bogimbah facility to save money.

Despite this difficult history, the island is now a place of natural wonder. The landscape features diverse environments, from sand dunes to coastal areas.

The island also contains many archaeological sites, with an estimated 500 Indigenous sites located there.

K'gari represents a deep connection between geography, history, and culture. For a long time, the island was known by its colonial name, Fraser Island. However, on June 7, 2023, the state government officially renamed it K'gari. This change recognizes the traditional name used by the Butchulla people. It honors the long history of the original inhabitants. The island remains a vital part of Australia's natural and cultural heritage. It serves as a reminder of how landscapes and names can change over time.
