It sits along the south-eastern coast in the Wide Bay–Burnett region of Queensland. You can find it just north of the capital city, Brisbane. The island is a World Heritage site, which means it is special to the whole world. This title covers the island, the water around it, and parts of the nearby mainland. These areas are part of the Great Sandy National Park.

The Butchulla people are the traditional owners of this land. They have lived here for a very long time, perhaps between 5,000 and 50,000 years ago. Long ago, the island was actually part of the mainland. It became an island about 10,000 to 20,000 years ago when the sea levels rose.

Butchulla stories tell of a spirit named Yendingie who helped make the sea and land. He was joined by a white spirit named Princess K'gari. The story says he changed her into this beautiful island.

European explorers visited the island many years ago. James Cook was the first Briton to see it in May 1770. He named a spot Indian Head after seeing Aboriginal people there. Later, Matthew Flinders sailed past the island in 1799 and 1802. He even landed at Sandy Cape while making maps. In 1836, a ship called the Stirling Castle hit coral and sank. Captain James Fraser died after the wreck, so settlers later named the island Fraser Island.

Life on the island has changed many times. In the past, many Butchulla people lived there, sometimes up to 3,000 people in winter. They used the seafood in the area to live. Later, things became very hard for the Butchulla people. Conflict with settlers and new diseases caused their numbers to drop. In 1897, the government moved many Indigenous people to a camp on the west coast. One camp was at Bogimbah, where conditions were very difficult.
