He lived from 1798 to 1874. He is most well known for his massive work called Histoire de France. This series of books tells the long story of France. It covers everything from the very beginning to the French Revolution. Most historians back then only wrote about kings and wars. Michelet wanted to do something different. He believed that regular people shaped the world. He looked at the customs of common people to tell history. This was a very new way to think about the past.

Michelet had a very busy life of learning and writing. His father was a master printer, so Jules helped him with work. He studied at the Lycée Charlemagne, a famous school in Paris. In 1821, he passed a big university exam. Soon, he became a professor of history. He married Pauline Rousseau in 1824, and they had a daughter named Adèle. Later, in 1849, he married Athénaïs Michelet. She was a writer of natural history. She helped him a lot with his many books. He even said she was a big part of his work.

One of his biggest ideas was about a time called the Renaissance. This word means "rebirth" in French. Michelet used this term to describe a new era in Europe. This era followed the Middle Ages. It was a time of new art and big ideas. He showed how people moved from old ways to new ways. He also wrote many books about nature. He wrote about birds, insects, and the sea. He even wrote a book about mountains. These books showed how much he loved the natural world.

Michelet wrote many important books during his life. His huge project, Histoire de France, had 19 volumes. He finished it in 1867 after working for 30 years. He also wrote about the French Revolution. One of his books, Les Femmes de la Révolution, looked at women in history. This book was so famous that it inspired the artist Vincent van Gogh.

Van Gogh used a quote from Michelet in a drawing called Sorrow. Michelet also wrote about religion and how people live together.

His ideas still matter to people today. He believed history was a struggle between different forces. He thought history was a record of man struggling against nature. He also thought about how machines changed life. He saw that machines helped poor people buy things. For example, he said they helped families buy nice cloth for their homes. Even though he had many personal biases, his work was very vivid. He was a man who saw the world in a very deep way. He wanted everyone to see the beauty in history and nature.
