He is most famous for making the essay a popular way to write. An essay is a short piece of writing about a specific subject. Montaigne used these essays to mix his own life stories with deep thoughts. He often shared personal stories, which people called anecdotes. Some people at the time thought his style was too messy. They did not like how he wandered away from his main topics. However, his way of writing helped start a new spirit of open inquiry. He famously asked the question, "What do I know?"

Montaigne had a very unusual childhood and education. His father, Pierre Eyquem, wanted him to understand all kinds of people. Because of this, Michel lived for three years with a peasant family in a small cottage. After those years, he returned to his family's large estate, the Château de Montaigne. His father also wanted him to learn Latin perfectly. To do this, the family and all the servants spoke only Latin to him. He even learned Greek through games and conversations instead of just using books. This special way of learning made him feel a sense of liberty and delight.

As he grew up, Montaigne held many important jobs in France. He studied law and worked in the legal system. He became a councillor for the Parlement in Bordeaux, which was a high court. He even served as a courtier at the royal court of King Charles IX. During his time at court, he was with the king during the siege of Rouen in 1562. He was even given the collar of the Order of Saint Michael. This was the highest honor for a nobleman in France.

One of the most important parts of his life was a deep friendship. At age 25, he met a poet named Étienne de La Boétie. Their friendship was so strong that Montaigne said their souls blended together. Sadly, La Boétie died in 1563, possibly from the plague or tuberculosis. This loss changed Montaigne deeply. Many people believe he started writing his famous essays to keep his friend's memory alive. He used his writing to talk to the reader as if they were his lost friend.

Montaigne's life also included family and personal challenges. He married Françoise de la Cassaigne in 1565. They had six daughters, but only one daughter, Léonor, lived to be an adult. He also experienced a scary riding accident on his estate. A companion collided with him on horseback, which knocked him unconscious. This brush with death made him think much more about life. He eventually became the Lord of Montaigne and lived at his family's château.
