Their main goal is to settle legal disputes fairly. They must follow the law to reach a final decision. Judges hold a lot of power in a government. They can order police to make arrests or searches. They can also order people to go to jail or be deported. To keep things fair, higher courts can check a judge's work.

How a judge works depends on the legal system. In an adversarial system, like in the U.S. or England, the judge is like a referee. They make sure everyone follows the correct rules. Lawyers present evidence to a jury of regular citizens. The jury finds the facts, and the judge decides the sentence. In an inquisitorial system, common in much of Europe, the judge does more. They act as the main factfinder and make the decisions alone. In some places, a judge even helps with investigations as an examining magistrate.

Becoming a judge requires a lot of hard work and study. Some people are volunteer judges, like English magistrates. These volunteers are not required to have legal training and do not get paid. Professional judges must have a legal education. In the U.S., they usually need a Juris Doctor degree. Most professional judges are chosen from experienced attorneys. Some judges are chosen through elections. In the U.S., federal judges are appointed for life unless they retire or are removed.

Gender numbers change depending on where you look. In countries like Slovenia and Greece, over 70% of first-instance judges are women. In the U.S. and UK, over 70% of these judges are men. In Romania, more than 80% of High Court judges are women.

Judges also have special ways of dressing and acting. Many wear long robes, often in black or red. They sit on a raised platform called a bench. Some judges use a small hammer called a gavel. In some parts of the world, judges wear wigs for special ceremonies. In Oman, a judge wears a long stripe of red, green, and white. In India, lawyers used to call judges "My Lord." Now, they often use the term "Your Honour."
