He was born in Agen, France, in 1540. His father was a famous doctor and scholar named Julius Caesar Scaliger. His father taught him to write at least 80 lines of Latin every single day. This hard work helped him learn many languages very well. Later, he learned Greek, Hebrew, and Arabic. He was a man who loved to find the truth in old books.

Scaliger traveled to many different places to learn more about the world.

He visited Italy and even traveled to England and Scotland. During these trips, he met many smart people who helped him grow. He also spent time in Geneva, where he worked as a teacher. At one point, he had to move often because of a war in France. He even had to act as a guard during some of these difficult times.

Before Scaliger, most people only focused on Greece and Ancient Rome. He showed that other lands were just as important to study. He looked closely at the history of Egypt, Babylon, and Persia. He also studied Jewish history in a new way. He believed we must compare all these different stories to find the real timeline of the past.

Scaliger used math and science to solve mysteries about time.

He studied old calendars and how people used to count years. By using the work of scientists like Nicolaus Copernicus, he found new ways to understand ancient systems. He even helped reconstruct a lost ancient document called the Chronicle of Eusebius. This helped scholars better understand how long ago different events actually happened. He turned history into a more careful and logical science.

In 1593, Scaliger moved to the Netherlands to live in Leiden.
