He was born in Leningrad, which is now called Saint Petersburg. His family lived in small, crowded apartments and had very little money. As a young child, he faced a very hard time called the Siege of Leningrad. During this period, he and his parents almost died from hunger. These difficult years left him with health problems for the rest of his life. Even as a child, he felt different from the people around him.

Brodsky was a person who loved to learn by himself.

He worked many different jobs to get by. He worked in a ship's boiler room and as a helper for a geologist. He even worked at a morgue, which is a place where bodies are kept. While working these jobs, he taught himself many new languages. He learned Polish so he could read Polish poets. He also learned English so he could read poems by John Donne.

His journey into poetry began in a small way. In 1959, he found a book of poems while visiting a city called Yakutsk. This moment changed his life and showed him what he wanted to do.

A famous poet named Anna Akhmatova became his mentor and encouraged his work. She was a very important leader in the world of Russian poetry. However, the leaders of the Soviet Union did not like his writing. They thought his poems were not helpful to their country.

In 1964, the government put Brodsky on trial for "social parasitism." This meant they thought his work as a poet was not a real job. They sentenced him to five years of hard labor. He spent 18 months living in a small cottage in a place called Norenskaya.

Even though life was hard, he liked having his own private space. He spent his nights reading books by writers like W. H. Auden. In 1972, the government forced him to leave his home forever.

Brodsky moved to the United States and became a great teacher. He taught at many famous schools like Yale and Columbia.

In 1987, he won the Nobel Prize in Literature for his beautiful writing. He was also named the United States Poet Laureate in 1991. Today, many people study his poems as classic works of art. His life shows how much power words can have in the world.
