Brodsky was born in Leningrad, which is now known as Saint Petersburg. He grew up in a Russian Jewish family during a very difficult era. His father was a photographer for the Soviet Navy. His mother worked as a professional interpreter to support the family. During his early childhood, he survived the Siege of Leningrad. This was a period of extreme hardship where he nearly died of starvation. These experiences caused him to face health problems throughout his entire life. He also felt like a dissident from a young age due to his background.

As a young man, Brodsky pursued a path of intense self-education. He worked many different jobs to survive in the Soviet Union. He worked as a milling machine operator and in a ship's boiler room. He even worked at a morgue, where he assisted with bodies. During these years, he taught himself several languages. He learned Polish to translate poets like Czesław Miłosz. He also learned English to read the works of John Donne. This dedication to learning helped him develop a deep interest in philosophy and mythology.

Brodsky's career in poetry began in earnest during the 1950s. In 1959, a visit to a bookstore in Yakutsk changed his life. He found a book of poems by Evgeny Baratynsky. This moment gave him a sense of purpose in life. He eventually met the famous poet Anna Akhmatova. She became his mentor and encouraged his literary growth. However, his relationship with the artist Marina Basmanova also brought complexity to his life. His work was often circulated in secret through a system called samizdat. This was a way for writers to share forbidden texts.

The Soviet authorities eventually targeted Brodsky for his writing. In 1963, his poetry was denounced as "pornographic and anti-Soviet." He was arrested and charged with social parasitism. This charge meant the state believed he was not contributing to society through real work. The judge questioned why anyone recognized him as a poet. In 1964, he was sentenced to five years of hard labor. He spent 18 months in the Arkhangelsk region. Surprisingly, he described this time in the Arctic as some of his best moments. He enjoyed the luxury of having his own private cottage.

In 1972, the Soviet government decided to force Brodsky into exile. They broke into his apartment and took his papers. On June 4, he was placed on a plane to Vienna, Austria. He left with only a suitcase containing a typewriter and some books.

He never returned to his home country after this departure. In the United States, he found new supporters like W. H. Auden. This help allowed him to settle and continue his academic career. He eventually taught at prestigious universities like Yale, Columbia, and Michigan. His transition from a persecuted poet to an American academic was a major turning point.

Brodsky's later years were marked by immense international recognition. In 1987, he was awarded the Nobel Prize in Literature. The Nobel Committee honored his all-embracing authorship and poetic intensity. In 1991, he was appointed the United States Poet Laureate. These honors cemented his status as one of the most important writers of his century. His life connects the worlds of Russian tradition and American academia. He remains a symbol of artistic resistance against totalitarian control. His legacy continues through the many conferences and memoirs dedicated to his work.
