He was born in 1882. He grew up near the border of Texas. This helped him learn to speak English and Spanish.

José cared a lot about learning. He joined a group of students called the Ateneo de la Juventud. This group wanted new ideas for schools. Later, he became a leader for the National University of Mexico.

He even made a new logo for the school. The logo had a map of Latin America on it.

In 1921, José became the head of the Secretariat of Public Education. This was a big job. He helped make many books for schools. He wanted all people to have a good education.

José had many big ideas. He wrote about a "cosmic race." He thought that different groups of people could mix together. This idea changed how many people thought about culture. Some people today disagree with his views on native groups. He died in 1959 while he was working at his desk.
