He is often called the "godfather of American avant-garde cinema." This title reflects his massive influence on experimental film. He did not make movies for mainstream commercial success. Instead, he focused on art that challenged traditional storytelling. His work was exhibited in museums and at festivals globally. Mekas was a central figure in the New American Cinema movement. He believed that film could be a deeply personal medium.

To create his art, Mekas used a specific method called "diary filmmaking." He often used a Bolex 16mm camera to record his daily life.

Rather than following a scripted plot, he captured real moments. He filmed his friends, his family, and his own thoughts. This approach turned the camera into a constant companion. In 2007, he practiced this intensely with "The 365 Day Project." During this project, he released one film every single day on his website. His later work even expanded into multi-monitor installations and sound immersion pieces.

Mekas's career involved building many important institutions for artists. In 1954, he and his brother Adolfas founded the journal *Film Culture*. In 1962, he co-founded The Film-Makers' Cooperative. Later, in 1964, he helped start the Filmmakers' Cinematheque. This organization eventually became the Anthology Film Archives.

Today, the Anthology Film Archives is a major repository for avant-garde film. It serves as a museum, a library, and a screening space. Mekas also served as its director. He worked with others on the "Essential Cinema" project to identify important cinematic works.

The history of Mekas's life is marked by significant movement and struggle. He was born in Semeniškiai, Lithuania, on December 24, 1922.

During World War II, he lived under Nazi occupation. He worked in the culture sections of two local newspapers. Historians debate the exact nature of his wartime activities. Mekas claimed he secretly transcribed BBC broadcasts to support the underground. In 1944, he and his brother attempted to reach Switzerland. They were stopped in Germany and imprisoned in a labor camp for eight months. They eventually escaped and hid on a farm until the war ended.

After the war, Mekas moved to the United States in 1949. He settled in Williamsburg, Brooklyn, and began his artistic life. He was a very active mentor to many famous artists. He supported filmmakers like Martin Scorsese and Chantal Akerman. He also worked closely with artists such as Yoko Ono and Andy Warhol.

Mekas even used his platform to fight against censorship. In 1964, he was arrested for showing certain films. He launched campaigns to defend the right of artists to show their work. This activism helped protect LGBTQ-themed films during that era.

His creative output was vast and reached many different people. His major films include *The Brig* (1964) and *Walden: Diaries, Notes and Sketches* (1968). He was also a celebrated poet in his native Lithuania. His collection *Idylls of Semeniskiai* was published in 1948. In 2024, the Centre Pompidou dedicated its annual Poetry Day to him. This event included readings and screenings in cities like Paris, Seoul, and Los Angeles. His influence is seen in the many critics he helped launch, such as Amy Taubin.

Mekas's legacy connects film to the broader worlds of poetry and social activism. He showed that film could function like a written diary. His work bridges the gap between personal memory and public art. Even after his death in 2019, his impact continues. His last work, *Requiem*, premiered posthumously at The Shed in New York City. It was performed alongside a musical piece by Verdi. The world continues to study his life through retrospectives and dedicated film festivals.
