He was a filmmaker, a poet, and a writer. People often call him the "godfather of American avant-garde cinema." This means he helped lead a new way of making art films. He did not just make movies for big theaters. Instead, he made art that people could find in museums and festivals. His work was special because it felt very personal and real. He wanted to show the beauty in small, everyday moments.

To make his art, Mekas often used a small 16mm camera.

He loved to record his own life as it happened. These are called "diary films." Instead of making up a story, he filmed his friends and family. He even filmed his children, Oona and Sebastian, in his movies. He once even started a project called "The 365 Day Project." During that time, he released one film every single day on his website. This showed how much he loved to capture life through a lens.

Mekas was born in Semeniškiai, Lithuania, on December 24, 1922.

His life was not always easy. During World War II, he lived under Nazi occupation. He worked for two newspapers during this time. Some historians debate exactly what his role was during the war. Mekas said he helped people in secret by transcribing news. In 1944, he and his brother Adolfas tried to reach Switzerland. They were stopped in Germany and stayed in a labor camp for eight months. They eventually escaped and hid on a farm until the war ended.

After the war, Mekas moved to the United States in 1949.

He settled in Brooklyn and became a very busy leader in the art world. He helped start the Film-Makers' Cooperative in 1962. He also co-founded the Anthology Film Archives in 1964. This place is now one of the most important libraries for art films. He also helped start a magazine called Film Culture in 1954. Mekas used these places to support other artists and show new kinds of movies. He even fought against censorship to protect films that people wanted to see.

Many famous artists worked with or learned from Mekas.

His films, like "Walden: Diaries, Notes and Sketches," are shown in museums all over the world. Even today, people celebrate his life through poetry days and film festivals. His work reminds us that even the simplest moments can become great art. He showed the world that a camera can be a lifelong companion.
