Joko Anwar is a highly influential figure in modern Indonesian cinema.

He works in many different roles within the film industry. He is a director, a producer, and a screenwriter. He also performs as an actor in various films. Anwar is celebrated for his ability to master many different genres. He has created supernatural horror, psychological thrillers, and live-action superhero movies. His work has reached a massive audience both in Indonesia and internationally. This versatility has made him one of the most important filmmakers in his country.

Anwar’s career involves several complex stages of filmmaking. He often begins as a screenwriter, which means he writes the story and the dialogue. He frequently collaborates with other writers to develop these scripts. Once a script is ready, he moves into the role of a director. As a director, he guides the actors and manages the visual style of the movie. He also serves as an executive producer for large projects.

In this role, he oversees the creative direction of entire film series. For example, he helps manage the Bumilangit Cinematic Universe. This is a planned series of eight films featuring different comic book superheroes.

Anwar’s journey to filmmaking was not a direct path. He was born in Medan, North Sumatra, in 1976. As a student, he enjoyed writing and directing plays. He originally wanted to attend a film school to study cinema. However, his family did not have the funds to pay for that education. Instead, he enrolled at the Bandung Institute of Technology to study Aeronautical Engineering.

After graduating in 1999, he worked as a journalist and a film critic for The Jakarta Post. It was during an interview with filmmaker Nia Dinata that his career in professional film production truly began.

His early professional work brought him significant mainstream success. In 2003, he co-wrote the screenplay for the hit film Arisan!. This film won many awards, including several at the 2004 Citra Awards. In 2005, Anwar made his directorial debut with the romantic comedy Joni's Promise. This film earned him a nomination for Best Director at the Citra Awards. He also wrote and directed Dead Time: Kala in 2007. This was Indonesia's first film noir feature film. It received praise from international critics for its sophisticated storytelling.

Anwar has received prestigious recognition throughout his career. He has won three Citra Awards for his work in directing and screenwriting.

He won the Best Director award twice. The first was in 2015 for the urban drama A Copy of My Mind. The second was in 2020 for the folk horror film Impetigore. His film Impetigore also set a record with 17 Citra Award nominations. He has also been nominated for seven Maya Awards. These honors demonstrate his high level of skill and his impact on the industry.

His films have achieved massive commercial success with huge numbers of viewers. His supernatural horror film Satan's Slaves is a major milestone. Released in 2017, it was the highest-grossing horror film in Indonesia at that time. It earned 4.2 million admissions from theatergoers. The sequel, Satan's Slaves 2: Communion, was even more successful.

It reached 6.39 million admissions and became the third highest-grossing Indonesian film of all time. These figures show how deeply his stories connect with the public.

Anwar's work connects Indonesian stories to global platforms and traditions. He brought Indonesian superheroes to the big screen with the film Gundala in 2019. This film launched the first phase of a larger cinematic universe. He also works with international streaming services like Netflix. In 2024, his anthology series Joko Anwar's Nightmares and Daydreams was released.

By blending local culture with popular genres like sci-fi and horror, he helps Indonesian cinema reach a global audience. His career shows how a passion for storytelling can bridge different cultures and mediums.
