Nyi Pu was a central figure in the history of Burmese cinema. He was the first actor in the nation's film industry. His work helped establish a new way of storytelling in Burma. Nyi Pu was born as Ba Htay on 12 September 1900. He grew up in Prome, which is also called Pyay. His parents were Ba Nyunt and Nyein Shin. He lived during the era of British colonial rule. This was a time of significant political change in the region.

In 1920, Ba Htay participated in the First University Strike. This was a protest against the British rulers. During that same year, he entered the world of film. He worked with a man named Ohn Maung. Ohn Maung was looking to produce films in Burma. Ba Htay also assisted a photographer named Maung Maung. These collaborations helped build the very first movies in the country. It was a period of experimentation and new beginnings.

To start his professional career, he adopted a screen name. He chose the name Nyi Pu. In his language, this name means "Short Brother." He used this name when he starred in Myitta Nit Athuyar. This movie was released in 1920. It holds the distinction of being the first-ever film made in Burma. This moment marked the official birth of Burmese cinema. From there, his career expanded into many different roles.

Nyi Pu's career spanned several different eras of filmmaking. During the 1920s and 1930s, he focused on silent films. These films relied on visual acting rather than recorded sound. He was not only an actor but also a director. A director is the person who manages the creative aspects of a film. He directed movies such as Shwe Hninzi in 1929. He also directed Japan Yin Thwe in 1935. He even directed films like Sekkya Shin in 1925.

His work continued long after the silent era ended. After World War II, he made more films in the 1950s and 1960s. He even worked on audio films, which use sound differently. One example is the film Ko Yin Thwe from 1955. His filmography includes many titles like Mya Aye Yin from 1927. He also worked on Pan Thitsa in 1954. This long list of films shows his dedication to the craft. He remained active in the industry for many decades.

Nyi Pu also took on important leadership roles. He served as the chairman of the Myanmar Motion Picture Organization. He held this position from 1969 to 1972. This organization represents the professionals working in the film industry. His influence extended to his own family as well. His youngest brother, Tin Maung, became an accomplished film director. This shows that cinema was a significant part of their family legacy.

Nyi Pu passed away on 1 September 1996. He died in the city of Yangon. He was 95 years old at the time of his death. He was survived by his wife, San Yin. They had five children together. His life connected the very first moments of Burmese film to the modern era. He helped create the foundation for all future Burmese actors and directors. His legacy is found in the history of the nation's art.
