Johnny learned about music through his many surroundings. As a small child, he loved hearing his mother sing ballads. He also listened to the music of his neighbors. He heard people singing in the Gullah language. He even attended Black church services to hear the music there. These different sounds helped him understand rhythm and melody. He did not have formal training, but he memorized many songs by age twelve.

Johnny's early life in Savannah, Georgia, helped shape his talent. He grew up near saltwater marshes and mossy trees. He spent summers at a home called "Vernon View." The starry nights and tidal waters inspired his writing later in life. He also worked a job sweeping floors at an ice cream shop when he was ten. His family had a long history in the South. His great-grandfather was a General named Hugh Weedon Mercer.

In 1928, Johnny moved to New York City at age nineteen. He wanted to work in the busy world of jazz and blues. Life was hard at first, and he sometimes lived on only oatmeal. He eventually found success writing lyrics for many different musicians. One big break came when he worked with Hoagy Carmichael. Together, they created the hit song "Lazybones." This song helped Johnny become a recognized member of the Tin Pan Alley music group.

Later, Johnny moved to Hollywood to write music for films. He followed his idol, the famous singer Bing Crosby, to California. He wrote many songs for movies, such as "I'm an Old Cowhand from the Rio Grande." This song was inspired by a road trip he took through Texas. Johnny also helped start Capitol Records with his business partners. His work helped change how movies and stage shows used music to tell stories. His songs are still played and loved by people all over the world.
