He wrote the music and the words for nearly 1,000 songs. His musical career lasted for more than 60 years. People loved his songs because they had happy, swinging rhythms. He often used bright and strange images in his lyrics. One song, "Y'a d'la joie," describes a subway car flying into the air. Another song, "Polka du Roi," is about wax figures in a museum. These creative ideas made his music feel very special to listeners.

Trenet's music often combined French styles with American jazz sounds. He started his solo career in 1937 by recording "Je chante." This song was so energetic that people called him a "singing vagabond." He also worked with a pianist named Johnny Hess from 1933 to 1936. They performed at famous places like the Alhambra in Paris. They recorded 18 discs together for a company called Pathé. Their most successful record was "Quand les beaux jours seront là/Sur le Yang-Tsé-Kiang." After his military service, he earned the nickname "Le Fou chantant," which means "The Singing Madman."

As a child, he enjoyed painting and making sculptures. He even studied art in Berlin and at schools in France. A family friend was a painter known as the "Catalan Renoir." This friend took Trenet on trips to look at art. Because of this, his song lyrics often have a "painter's eye" for color. He used these details to describe places like the Pyrenees mountains.

Many of his most famous songs became hits all over the world. He wrote "La Mer" in 1943 while riding on a train.

He also wrote "Nationale 7" in 1955 to celebrate paid holidays. Trenet even traveled to the United States and sang in New York City. He became friends with famous people like Charlie Chaplin and Louis Armstrong.
