He was a singer, a songwriter, an actor, and even a film director. People often found his work bold or even shocking. This caused many big arguments in France during his life. However, he is now seen as a legendary figure in his home country. He wrote over 550 songs in his career. Many other artists have performed his music more than 1,000 times.

His music was special because it did not stay in one style. He started with jazz and a French style called chanson. Later, he explored rock, funk, reggae, and even electronic music. He used clever wordplay in his lyrics to make them funny or strange. Sometimes his songs were meant to be a bit rebellious. He even used rhythms from African music in his album Gainsbourg Percussions. This mix of sounds made it very hard to put him in just one category.

Serge was born in Paris on April 2, 1928. His parents, Joseph and Olga, moved to France from Russia. His mother was a singer, and his father was a piano player. As a child, Serge had to face very hard times during World War II. He had to hide from danger while living under a false name. These difficult memories stayed with him for a long time. Later in life, he used these experiences to find inspiration for his songwriting.

He began his career by playing the piano in clubs and bars. He eventually changed his name from Lucien to Serge. He chose the name Gainsbourg to honor the English painter Thomas Gainsborough. In 1957, he started performing his own songs on stage. He wrote "Le Poinçonneur des Lilas" about a worker on the Paris Métro. He also wrote many hits for young singers like France Gall. One of those songs, "Poupée de cire, poupée de son," won the Eurovision Song Contest in 1965.
