John helped group plants by how they look. He divided them into two groups. One group has one seedling leaf. We call these monocotyledons. The other group has two seedling leaves. We call these dicotyledons. People still use these names today.

John also found a way to tell how old an ash tree is. He looked at the rings inside the tree. This is called dendrochronology. He was one of the first to give a real definition for a species. He said a species is a group of similar living things. These things come from a common ancestor.
