He is most famous for having two women on his crew. Their names were Anne Bonny and Mary Read. This was very unusual for that time period.

Some history books tell a long story about his life. One book, written by Captain Charles Johnson in 1724, gives many details. It says Rackham was a pirate from England. It claims he worked for a captain named Charles Vane. The book says Rackham helped lead a vote to replace Vane. However, many historians think these stories might not be true. There is very little evidence to prove them.

Most real records show Rackham was active in the year 1720. In August of that year, he stole a small ship. This ship belonged to a man named John Ham. Rackham and his crew then took several small fishing boats. They did this along the northern coast of Jamaica. This caused a lot of trouble for the local fishermen.

Rackham's time as a pirate was very short. In October 1720, a man named Jonathan Barnet found him. Barnet was a former privateer, which is a type of sailor. Barnet used guns to stop Rackham's ship near Jamaica. Rackham and his crew were caught and taken to a trial. The Governor of Jamaica, Sir Nicholas Lawes, oversaw the legal process.

The court found Rackham and his crew guilty of piracy. John Rackham was executed in Port Royal on November 18, 1720. His crew members, Anne Bonny and Mary Read, also faced trial. Both women claimed they were pregnant at the time. This meant they were given a delay in their punishment. Many people still remember Rackham because of his famous crew.
