This work allowed men to gain wealth through raids. Morgan became very rich by attacking Spanish settlements. He used his money to buy three large sugar plantations in Jamaica.

His career involved many difficult and daring missions. In 1667, Morgan gathered a large group of men. He led ten ships and 500 men for his task. He later gained 200 more men from Tortuga.

It is not known how he reached the West Indies. Some say he was part of an army. Others think he was an apprentice to a cutlery maker. He likely served under Sir Christopher Myngs in the 1650s. He eventually became a close friend of Governor Thomas Modyford.

In 1671, Morgan led a famous raid on Panama City.

His men traveled through thick, hot jungles. This attack happened even after a peace treaty was signed. Because of this, Morgan was arrested. He traveled to London to meet King Charles II.

The King showed him favor instead of punishment. In 1674, Morgan was named a Knight Bachelor. He later served as the lieutenant governor of Jamaica.

Today, people have different views of Henry Morgan. A man named Alexandre Exquemelin wrote a book about him. The book claimed Morgan was a mean leader.

Morgan sued the publishers for these claims and won. Some historians see him as a hero or a leader. Others see him as a scoundrel. Many pirate stories in books are still inspired by his life.
